Horror Types

In class we have covered the following types of Gothic, SCI-FI, Paranormal, and Survival. On this page we are going to expand your understanding by going further in depth of their elements of what determines each type.

Now each type can hold elements of other types, where gothic horror contains supernatural characters, and survival may include science-fiction.

The type is determined by the overarching story of the piece.

Talk to Me
(2023)

Talk to Me is a brilliantly original, terrifying Australian horror movie with disturbing imagery that will linger long after the closing credits. The scares come as a result of a group of young people -- led by Mia, who's trying to deal with her mother's death by suicide -- playing a game that leads to them becoming possessed. There are brutal sequences where those who are under the otherworldly influence attack themselves and others.

Frankenstein

This edition is the original 1818 text, which preserves the hard-hitting and politically charged aspects of Shelley's original writing, as well as her unflinching wit and strong female voice. Frankenstein tells the story of gifted scientist Victor Frankenstein who succeeds in giving life to a being of his own creation. However, this is not the perfect specimen he imagines that it will be, but rather a hideous creature who is rejected by Victor and mankind in general.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Perculiar Children.

A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. A strange collection of very curious photographs. It all waits to be discovered in Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, an unforgettable novel that mixes fiction and photography in a thrilling reading experience. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow-impossible though it seems-they may still be alive.

Gothic

Romantic characters, dramatic plot points, more of a focus on the atmosphere & mood of the piece, often set in classical periods, and commonly formal settings.

Rebecca
Alfred Hitchcock 1940

A shy young woman, whose name is significantly never revealed, meets the handsome, aristocratic widower Maxim de Winter in Monte Carlo and is swept off her feet by his whirlwind courtship. Following their wedding, they move to his Cornish estate Manderley, where the brooding Maxim once lived with his first wife Rebecca. Manderley is ruled over by sinister housekeeper Mrs Danvers, who is ferociously devoted to the memory of her dead mistress and undermines the new wife at every turn.

The Elephant Man David Lynch 1980

Shot in superb black and white by Freddie Francis, David Lynch’s marvellous, deeply moving film concerns John Merrick, a man so terribly deformed that he’s displayed in freak shows until a doctor (Hopkins) takes an interest in his condition and welfare. Though this variant on the beauty and the beast theme is in some ways Lynch’s most conventional film, its vision of Victorian London is also the stuff of nightmares. Hurt’s subtly nuanced performance as Merrick is enormously expressive.

The Tell Tale Heart
Edgar Allen Poe 1843

"The Tell-Tale Heart" is a short story by American writer Edgar Allan Poe, first published in 1843. It is related by an unnamed narrator who endeavors to convince the reader of the narrator's sanity while simultaneously describing a murder the narrator committed
