Graphic Novels

Graphic novels, comic books, picture books, and digital media are all forms of visual literature that we can interact with visually.

This allows for the reader to visualise even more than simply reading sentences on a page, and allows the author to portray exactly the vision of the story they are creating.

On this learning platform we will mainly focussing on graphic novels but feel free to discuss any other forms of visual literature that you might be interested in using for your final assessment.

What literary devices do Graphic Novels use?

Visual literary devices include:

Colour, tones, and shades.

Lighting and shadows.

Angles, lines, and direction.

Dialogue and blank space.

This allows for the reader to visualise the authors and the illustrators' ideas that they were trying to convey through visual cues and imagery.

In 2014, Australian comic artist Sutu completed an artist in residence program at the Ilulissat Kunstmuseum in Greenland. During this time he collaborated with the Zeeb Berthelsen family and other community members to create a unique story in response to growing concerns about industrial growth in the arctic, the receding ice caps and the future of their young people.
