LITERARY DEVICES

We have discussed these devices in previous terms for our other genres of literature:
Romance, Science Fiction, Fantasy, and now Horror.
In writing we must use these devices to create and tell a story to your audience.

What we have covered:

Shock Value

Horror stories should have a shocking element, such as a surprise twist or unexpected outcome. This can be used to create a sense of fear and dread in the intended audience.

Setting

Setting is when and where is the story set. This helps us visualise the locations, costumes, and time/place of the story. In horror you need a clear setting in order to understand the themes and scare factors.

Characters

Characters are an important element in any story, but especially in horror stories. The characters should be interesting, complex, and believable.

Mood/Atmosphere

Creating a suspenseful atmosphere with a sense of dread and tension is a key element for any horror story. A horror story should utilise its setting.
For example, a dark and stormy night, creates an uneasy feeling for the reader

Theme

Horror stories should have a clear theme. This can be anything from revenge, to the supernatural, to a moral lesson.

Theme should be consistent throughout the story and have a lasting impact on the reader.

Plot

A horror story should have a plot that keeps the reader engaged and on the edge of their seat. The plot should move quickly and have a few twists and turns to keep the reader guessing.
